Senior Adventures: Age is No Barrier

At Sukoon Unlimited, we believe that age should never be a barrier to having fun, exploring new places, and creating memories. That's why we recently hosted a heartwarming webinar on "Senior Adventures: Age is No Barrier," featuring our very own Sarathi, Karunakar Jha, and the dynamic Sanjeev Bhambri, founder of Senior Holidays. This session aimed to show our senior citizens that the world is still their playground, filled with endless possibilities!

A Journey Beyond Age
Karunakar kicked things off with an uplifting message: “Traveling is fun, it’s educational, it’s about learning, it’s about building relationships, and it’s a huge part of our memories.” He shared how pleasantly surprised he was to discover that seniors are now a major segment targeted by various businesses. “We should take advantage of such opportunities that come our way to enjoy as much as possible,” he encouraged.

An example that resonated strongly during the webinar was the story of Susan, a vibrant woman in her late 70s, who decided to pursue her lifelong dream of visiting the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru. Alone yet undeterred, she embarked on this incredible journey armed with curiosity and an open heart. Not only did she hike the breathtaking Inca Trail, but she also made lifelong friends with fellow travelers along the way. Susan's story exemplifies the indomitable spirit that thrives within our seniors, showing us that explorations are just waiting to happen!

Dreams Beyond the Horizon
Sanjeev Bhambri, with his wealth of experience in organizing tours for seniors, chimed in with a powerful statement: “Age is really just a number. I’ve hosted tours for lots of seniors, some whom you might even consider ‘super seniors,’ and the trips have always been fruitful. The oldest traveler I can remember was 95!” His words were a beacon of inspiration, proving that adventure knows no age limits.

He narrated a heartwarming story about Mrs. Gupta, a spirited 90-year-old who joined one of his journeys to Japan. During a lunch break in Tokyo, she gathered the group and curiously inquired about local delicacies, showcasing her zest for learning and experiencing new cultures. Inspired by her enthusiasm, every participant joined her on a delightful gastronomic expedition, sampling sushi, mochi, and ramen together, creating memories that would last a lifetime!

Stories of Adventure
Our webinar attendees were eager to share their travel experiences, painting a rich tapestry of joyful anecdotes. Sneh Lata, a seasoned traveler, recounted how traveling with Sanjeev has opened her eyes to off-beat adventures. “Sanjeev indulges in the itinerary with such passion,” she shared, “that’s what makes him different from the usual travel options. I’ve traveled abroad to places like Vietnam, Bhutan, Dubai, Scotland, and around India, and it’s always been an adventure.”

One memorable trip was when she visited Bhutan. The tranquil landscapes inspired her to meditate near a stunning cliffside monastery. “The serenity and beauty of the Himalayas created a sense of peace within me that is hard to replicate,” she explained. Her story is a beautiful reminder of how travel can provide not just adventure, but also profound personal reflection.

Another lively participant, Rajiv Sharma, shared his long-standing love for adventure sports and tourism. “I’m a certified rafter, mountaineer, and now at 61, I’m still in love with adventures. Passion makes all the difference. I’ve been to places that are unheard of, unknown, and far beyond, but we all returned with smiles, saying ‘Wow!’”

Rajiv narrated his exhilarating experience of white-water rafting in the Ganges. “As we navigated the rapids, I could see the sheer joy on everyone’s faces! Age didn’t matter; we were all there together, united by the thrill of adventure!” His enthusiasm was infectious, proving that age hasn’t slowed him down one bit.

Traveling Solo: Embracing Independence
When asked about whether senior citizens also travel solo, Sanjeev highlighted an interesting trend he’s noticed: a rising number of solo women travelers among senior citizens. “It’s amazing to see how many senior women are embracing travel on their own terms,” he shared. “They’re not just stepping out of their homes, but also out of their comfort zones, exploring the world with a sense of independence and adventure.”

He introduced the concept of "Able Tours," which offers specially designed itineraries ensuring a fulfilling travel experience for all, regardless of physical limitations. These options provide flexibility and comfort, allowing seniors, even those with mobility issues, the chance to explore while feeling supported.

Practical Tips for Senior Travel
One concern brought up during the webinar was from Gitanjali, who shared a past travel experience that left her feeling apprehensive when her husband had taken the wrong dosage of medicine in a foreign country. Sanjeev reassured her and the group, providing insight into better planning trips to ensure senior-friendly destinations with good medical assistance readily available.

Here’s a handy travel checklist:
  1. Health Check-Up: Prior to your adventure, get a medical check-up to confirm you’re fit to travel.
  2. Medications: Pack your medications in a clearly labeled bag, and include a list of prescriptions with dosage instructions.
  3. Emergency Contacts: Keep a list of emergency contacts handy, including local contacts at your destination.
  4. Travel Insurance: Ensure you have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies.
  5. Comfortable Clothing: Pack suitable clothing for the climate, and don’t forget your favorite walking shoes!
  6. Light Snacks: Carry non-perishable snacks to keep your energy up during the journey.
  7. Entertainment: Bring books, puzzles, or a tablet loaded with your favorite movies to keep you entertained.
  8. Senior-Friendly Destinations: Choose locations that are known for accessibility and good medical care.
  9. Plan Rest Days: Avoid overpacking your itinerary; plan days to relax and enjoy your surroundings.
  10. Stay Connected: Always keep your mobile phone charged and share your itinerary with loved ones.
