A Journey of Kindness from Humble Beginnings
Palam Kalyanasundaram’s life began in the small, remote village of Melakarivelamkulam in Tamil Nadu, a place without roads, schools, or electricity. He lost his father when he was just a year old. Despite these challenges, young Palam’s determination to learn never wavered. He studied by the light of kerosene lamps and candles, driven by an unyielding thirst for knowledge.
His passion for Tamil literature led him to St. Xavier’s College in Tirunelveli, where he was the only student in the course. When others suggested he switch subjects, he refused. His steadfastness earned him full sponsorship for his education. Later, he pursued Library Science at Madras University, even as the country faced the turmoil of the Indo-China war.
A life-changing moment occurred when he heard Prime Minister Nehru’s appeal for contributions to the defense fund on the radio. Moved by the call, Palam didn’t hesitate to donate his gold chain, becoming the first student to do so. This simple act of kindness was the start of a lifetime devoted to helping others.

With a gold medal in Library Science and master’s degrees in Literature and History, Palam became a librarian at an arts college. Over his 35-year career, he donated his entire salary to charity, supporting underprivileged children by providing them with food, shelter, and education. To sustain himself, he took on small, odd jobs, living with simplicity and purpose.
Palam made the extraordinary decision to remain unmarried, dedicating all his resources to social causes. After his retirement in 1998, he continued his mission by donating his pension and working as a waiter to fund more charitable activities. Remarkably, he gave away his ancestral property and even the Rs. 30 crores he received as part of the ‘Man of the Millennium’ award from an American organization.
In his post-retirement years, Palam founded ‘Paalam,’ a platform that connects donors with those in need. The initiative provides educational aid, medical assistance, blood donation services, and disaster relief. To understand the struggles of the homeless, Palam spent nights on pavements and railway platforms. His empathy and dedication have transformed countless lives, making him a beacon of hope for many.
