In 1998, Maria became involved in the Advance Locality Management (ALM) initiative, a program set up by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). Maria took charge of ALM number 33, which serves 44 residential societies across Bandra, Khar, and Santacruz. Maria’s vision for a cleaner and more sustainable community led her to take on one of the most challenging tasks waste segregation. She believed that waste segregation was the first step towards a zero-waste society. With dedication and persistence, she helped 20 residential societies in her area implement 100% waste segregation, turning them into zero-waste societies by introducing composting initiatives.

Her own building became the first in her community to adopt on-site composting in 2013, setting a powerful example for others. By separating waste into categories like wet, dry, e-waste, and medical waste, Maria not only minimized the amount of garbage sent to landfills but also helped reduce the burden on the municipal waste system. The compost produced from wet waste was used in community gardens, creating a closed-loop system that benefited everyone involved.


                                      

Overcoming Challenges and Pushing Forward
Maria’s efforts, however, have not been without challenges. She faced resistance from residents who were either unaware of the benefits of waste segregation or simply unwilling to change their habits. Some even criticized her work or tried to stop it. But Maria, with her unshakable determination, didn’t let these setbacks deter her. She believes that criticism is often a sign that you're on the right path, and she’s never let it stop her from pursuing her goal.

She recalls how, when she first started, she had to physically stand at the spot where the garbage truck picked up waste, sending back bins that were not properly segregated. This hands-on approach helped get the message across, especially to the children of her community, who took the lessons they learned and spread them to their families.

Despite facing threats from local goons and continued opposition, Maria’s passion for waste management and environmental sustainability has only grown. She continues to push forward, working with schools, churches, gardens, and other institutions in her community to spread awareness about the importance of waste segregation.
