Sukoon Adda: A Week of Fun, Laughter, and Meaningful Connections!

At Sukoon, every gathering is more than just an event—it’s a chance to relive memories, learn something new, and celebrate the joy of togetherness! This week was no different. From a nostalgic round of Antakshari to a thrilling sports quiz, a thought-provoking discussion on rewriting life stories, and an inspiring book club meet, our seniors brought their enthusiasm, wisdom, and playful spirit to every moment.

Whether it was testing their knowledge, sharing personal journeys, or simply enjoying a lively chat over music and books, each session was filled with warmth, laughter, and deep conversations. Missed out? Don’t worry—here’s a recap of all the wonderful moments we shared. Let’s dive in!

Antakshari: A Musical Walk Down Memory Lane!
This week’s Sukoon gathering was all about music, nostalgia, and shared joy! What started as a casual chat quickly turned into a lively session of Antakshari—the beloved song-based game where each participant picks up the melody with the last letter of the previous song.

With participants like Sangeeta, Sunil, BK, Gitanjali, Smita, and Naanu, the energy was infectious! From golden oldies to peppy Bollywood hits, everyone took turns singing their hearts out. The real challenge? Finding a song with the given word—like "hot"—which led to some hilarious moments and creative thinking. Sunil even suggested switching to letters instead of words, but the debate continues!

Alongside the singing, there were heartwarming moments—like a song dedicated to Sangeeta’s son, a conversation on cultural references, and even a multilingual word game that tested our memory and language skills.

Game On: A Spirited Sports Quiz with Sukoon!
What happens when a bunch of sports lovers (and some not-so-sporty ones!) come together for a fun-filled quiz? A whole lot of laughter, friendly competition, and a deep dive into India’s sporting legacy!

The session kicked off with BK and Gitanjali chatting about cricket, hockey, football, tennis, and badminton. Gitanjali confessed that while her son is a sports enthusiast, she’s never quite caught the bug. But hey, that didn’t stop her from joining in! Meanwhile, an exciting discussion about a potential trip to Singapore for a Parkinson’s conference added a travel twist to the day.

The real excitement began when Naanu, our lively quiz master, took the stage! With questions flying left and right—Who was the first Indian to score a double century in Test cricket? Which Indian athlete bagged a silver at the Rio Olympics?—everyone put their sports knowledge to the test. Some nailed it, others took wild guesses, and a few just cheered from the sidelines.

As the leaderboard kept changing, the competition heated up! Anup took an early lead, while others scrambled to catch up. Even technical hiccups couldn’t dampen the energy—because at Sukoon, it’s all about the fun, not just the scores!

Legends & Laughs: A Quiz on Famous Personalities with Sukoon!
Sukoon is all about fun, learning, and togetherness, and what better way to bring that to life than with a lively quiz hosted by our very own Ajitha! A retired teacher with a love for knowledge (and a great sense of humor about forgetfulness), Ajitha led a thrilling session where seniors tested their wits in a fast-paced, interactive format. The quiz had a new twist—questions appeared individually on screens, and scores depended not just on accuracy but also on how fast participants answered. While some, like Naanu, quickly took the lead, others struggled with questions like who discovered penicillin or which scientist developed the theory of relativity. The mix of confidence, guesswork, and light-hearted debates kept everyone engaged. And of course, no quiz is complete without a little tech confusion—Ajitha had a few hiccups with the chat box system but soon got the hang of it, reminding everyone that learning never stops!

The quiz sparked fascinating discussions, from the legacy of the "Iron Man of India" to whether Sunita Williams or Kalpana Chawla was the first Indian woman in space (spoiler: it was Kalpana Chawla!). When the Mona Lisa came up, it led to animated conversations about its mystery, and when Rakesh Sharma’s name was mentioned, everyone proudly recalled his famous words, "Saare Jahan Se Achha." Even when questions got tricky, the group stayed cheerful, embracing the challenge and celebrating each other’s knowledge. The joy of shared learning, the thrill of friendly competition, and the laughter over unexpected plot twists (yes, even quiz questions can have those!) made this session a hit. As the quiz wrapped up, one thing was clear—winning was fun, but the real prize was the camaraderie, the nostalgia, and the sheer joy of keeping our minds active.

Rewriting Life Stories | Embracing Change & Breaking Barriers
Life is a story, and every day brings a new page to fill. At Sukoon’s heartwarming session on Rewriting Life Stories, seniors discovered the magic of change and self-discovery with the ever-inspiring Geetha Shankar. She set the tone by asking a simple yet powerful question: What’s the newest thing you’ve done recently? The answers were nothing short of inspiring—Indumathi visited her hometown after 35 years, Anoop embraced yoga, BK took his first steps into the world of AI with ChatGPT, and Gitanjali rekindled her love for reading after cataract surgery. Each story was a testament to the fact that growth and adventure have no age limit!

Geetha beautifully illustrated how life’s patterns can sometimes hold us back, just like a Bonsai tree that never reaches its full potential because of its controlled environment. She encouraged everyone to break free from self-imposed limitations—whether it was Sivaguru believing he was too old for physically demanding tasks or Gitanjali overcoming the fear of walking alone after a stroke. With thought-provoking discussions on brain types, self-awareness, and the power of affirmations, participants learned how to reframe their beliefs and embrace transformation. As the session ended, the energy in the room was electric—every senior left with a newfound sense of confidence, ready to rewrite their own life stories with joy, purpose, and endless possibilities. At Sukoon, the pen is always in your hands!

Sukoon Book Club: Stories, Conversations, and the Joy of Reading!
This week’s Sukoon Book Club meeting was a delightful mix of stories, nostalgia, and thought-provoking discussions! We kicked things off with And They Lived Ever After: Disabled Women Retell Fairy Tales, a fresh and powerful take on classic stories, sparking deep conversations about representation and inclusivity. But we didn’t stop there—our love for storytelling took an exciting turn as we explored Shruti Natok, a Bengali-style dramatized reading. Imagine our book club bringing stories to life with expressive voices and emotions—sounds fun, right?

The conversation took a meaningful turn when we discussed accessibility for seniors and people with disabilities. Wouldn’t it be great to have a rating system for senior-friendly spaces? Because a little support can go a long way in making the world more open and welcoming.

We also had a special guest—bestselling author Neelam Kumar, who shared her book Wi-Fi and Wisdom, co-written with her 16-year-old grandson. The book dives into the generational divide, from relationships to tech habits, and their journey together gave us all something to think about (and maybe even inspired a few of us to chat more with our grandkids instead of just forwarding WhatsApp messages!).

Of course, no book club meeting is complete without reminiscing about the joy of reading and the bittersweet decline of physical bookstores. The charm of wandering through shelves, discovering hidden literary gems—it’s a feeling we don’t want to lose. AI may be changing the world, but the magic of books is timeless.

Understanding Insurance vs. Investment: Smart Financial Choices for Seniors
Financial security is crucial, especially in our senior years, when making informed decisions can significantly impact our peace of mind. In a recent discussion, experts emphasized the importance of distinguishing between insurance and investment—two terms often misunderstood and mistakenly interchanged.

Insurance is meant for risk protection, providing a safety net for unforeseen circumstances, while investments focus on growing wealth. Mixing the two can lead to lower returns, long-term commitments with little flexibility, and potential financial pitfalls. The session highlighted common pitfalls, including high-commission products, misleading sales tactics, and the need to carefully read policy terms.

Seniors were encouraged to ask the right questions, consult trusted advisors, and make financial choices aligned with their goals. The conversation concluded with a reminder that understanding financial products empowers individuals to take control of their future. Those interested in learning more were invited to connect with financial experts for guidance, ensuring a secure and worry-free retirement.

Every Sukoon Adda event is a celebration of learning, laughter, and connection. Whether it’s through music, quizzes, books, or meaningful discussions, our seniors are proving that life’s best moments are created together. Missed this week? Join us for the next one—we promise it’ll be just as engaging!
