In a world where wisdom is earned through experience, AP Thomas stands as a remarkable example of resilience, self-sufficiency, and an enduring zest for life. His journey from a carefree schoolboy walking to class with a simple cloth bag, to an early achiever in the railway sector, and now a contented retiree is filled with valuable lessons, cherished memories, and a love for exploring the world. Through his story, Thomas offers insights into the power of discipline, the importance of adaptability, and the beauty of finding happiness in life’s simplest moments.

Early Independence: A Compass, a Tiffin, and the Railways
Thomas’s story begins with a childhood marked by simplicity and self-reliance. His earliest memories are of walking to school with nothing more than a cloth bag slung over his shoulder, a small compass box, and a tiffin carrier. Unlike today’s students burdened with heavy backpacks, Thomas carried only the essentials. For him, the walk to school was not a chore but a daily adventure that symbolized the freedom and independence of his early years.

"Walking to school was never a task it was just life. We didn't need to be dropped off by our parents or carry heavy bags. It was simpler and happier." School, for Thomas, was more than just academics it was a place where friendships blossomed and joy was found in life’s little moments. He fondly recalls the excitement of recess, when he and his friends would rush to the playground, play until they were breathless, and return for lunch with flushed faces and wide smiles.

As he transitioned into adulthood, Thomas took a bold step toward independence. At just 18 or 19 years old, while many of his peers were still completing their studies, he became financially self-sufficient by joining the railways as an apprentice. This early leap into the workforce remains one of his proudest achievements.

"Today, students study until they’re 25 or 30 and still rely on their parents. But by 18, I was earning my own money. That independence made me who I am."

His apprenticeship introduced him to the rigors of hostel life a stark contrast to the comfort of home. With no family nearby, Thomas had to fend for himself. He vividly remembers the monotony of hostel food, particularly during his time in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, where the summer months meant eating only tinda (apple gourd) for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Yet, instead of complaining, he adapted.

"Put me anywhere, and I'll manage. I learned to eat whatever was available. It made me resilient."

Wisdom and Structure: The Foundation of Family Support
While Thomas takes great pride in his independence, he credits his family particularly his younger sister for being his anchor. Despite being younger, she was wise beyond her years and became his most trusted confidante.

"She was more than a sister she was my guide, my counselor. Whenever I felt lost, she was there to show me the way." Thomas recalls a time when self-doubt clouded his judgment. It was his sister who encouraged him to continue his education, urging him to push forward. Her words of wisdom gave him the strength to take on new challenges and believe in himself.

Beyond his sister, his parents also played a vital role in shaping his values. Their emphasis on discipline particularly waking up early and maintaining a structured routine became the foundation of Thomas’s lifelong habits.

"My parents believed that discipline shapes character. Waking up at 5 AM wasn’t just a rule it became second nature, something I carry with me to this day."

A Philosophy Forged by Experience: Caution and Unwavering Spirit
Through the course of his life, Thomas has learned to navigate the complexities of human relationships with care. His experiences taught him a vital lesson: "Don’t trust too quickly."

"In my younger years, I trusted easily. I believed people were always genuine. But life taught me to be cautious to be kind but careful." While he doesn’t advocate for mistrust, Thomas believes in measured caution. Even with friends and relatives, he advises taking time to understand people before placing complete trust in them.

"Don’t look at everyone with suspicion, but look at them with caution. Even loved ones sometimes have hidden motives." His life philosophy is also anchored in resilience. Thomas believes in facing every challenge head-on and never letting setbacks define him. His mantra is simple but powerful:

"Never give up. No matter how difficult things get, keep going. Challenges only make you stronger."

Embracing Retirement: Staying Active and Purposeful
After decades of hard work, retirement could have easily turned into a period of idleness. However, for Thomas, it became an opportunity for reinvention. Rather than settling into a sedentary lifestyle, he stayed active by volunteering at a government school, where he taught students. He also became the treasurer for a local club and participated in his building’s society committee, ensuring he remained socially and mentally engaged.

"Retirement wasn’t an end it was just a different chapter. I found new ways to stay involved and contribute."

The COVID-19 pandemic, however, disrupted his routine. With schools closed and social activities halted, Thomas found himself spending more time at home. Yet, he didn’t let the isolation weigh him down. He relied on self-discipline and personal hobbies to stay mentally and physically fit.

"I didn’t feel idle or restless. I kept walking, stretching, and keeping my mind sharp. Routine is what keeps you going." To this day, Thomas follows a disciplined lifestyle. He rises at 5 AM daily without an alarm, a habit ingrained since childhood. His mornings begin with light stretching and a walk, ensuring he stays fit.

"I don’t need an alarm. My body knows it’s time. It’s a habit I can’t let go of—and I never will."

Thomas takes pride in his natural approach to wellness. He relies on naturopathy and holistic remedies whenever possible, taking minimal medication.

"Not taking medicine is an achievement. Staying healthy naturally is something I am proud of."

A Love for Travel and an Unfulfilled Dream of Writing Throughout his life, Thomas has nurtured a deep passion for travel. His career with the railways took him across 20-30 countries, including Japan and several parts of Europe. With his sister living in Germany, he frequently visited her and used it as a base to explore the continent. He also has fond memories of traveling to Wales multiple times, where a close friend resides. "I’ve been lucky to see the world. From Japan’s cherry blossoms to Europe’s quaint villages each place holds a memory." Even now, Thomas dreams of embarking on new adventures. With a playful smile, he reveals his longstanding wish to visit Iceland. "Iceland is still on my list. I want to see it before, as I joke, America claims it!" However, there is one passion Thomas has yet to fulfill writing. Before retirement, he envisioned spending his free time documenting his travels and experiences. He even preserved 30-year-old newspaper cuttings, imagining they would inspire thoughtful articles. Yet, despite his initial enthusiasm, he hasn’t yet made time for writing, attributing it to lethargy and procrastination. "I always thought I’d write. I have clippings, memories, and stories. But I keep putting it off—maybe someday."
