From Academics to Tribes: How Prof. Sagar Redefined Purpose and Service

Prof. Alok Sagar's Inspirational Journey: From IIT Delhi to Tribal Activist in Betul, Madhya Pradesh

Some lives inspire us to rethink what truly matters. Prof. Alok Sagar’s life is one such story that teaches us the power of simplicity, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to a cause. From his early days in Delhi to his remarkable journey as a tribal activist in rural Madhya Pradesh, Prof. Sagar’s life has been a testament to living for others.

A Promising Start to a Remarkable Journey
Prof. Alok Sagar was born in 1951 into a distinguished family in Delhi’s Patparganj. His father was a senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, while his mother was a Physics professor at Miranda House, Delhi University. Excellence was in the family’s DNA, with his younger brother now a professor at IIT Delhi.

Alok Sagar followed an exceptional academic path, earning his master’s degree from IIT Delhi and pursuing a PhD at the University of Houston, Texas. He later returned to India to teach at IIT Delhi, starting in 1980. Among his students was Raghuram Rajan, who later became the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.

Despite his success, Prof. Sagar felt unfulfilled. He saw the inequalities around him and felt a pull toward making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. Just two years after joining IIT Delhi, he made a decision that would change his life forever. In 1982, he left his prestigious job to work with tribal communities in one of the most remote and underserved areas of India.

He settled in Kochamu village, Betul district, Madhya Pradesh, a place with no electricity, roads, or modern conveniences. The village, home to 750 tribal residents, welcomed this unlikely newcomer who quickly embraced their way of life. Prof. Sagar learned their language, understood their culture, and began working to improve their quality of life.

A Life Dedicated to Service and Nature

Prof. Sagar chose a life of simplicity, owning just three sets of kurtas and using a bicycle as his only mode of transport. For over four decades, he has been traveling across a 60-kilometer radius, distributing seeds and educating villagers about nature conservation. He has planted over 50,000 trees and continues to work tirelessly on rural development projects.

His efforts go beyond just planting trees. As part of the Shramik Adiwasi Sangathan, a group working for the empowerment of tribal communities, he has been instrumental in advocating for their rights and helping them preserve their way of life. He believes that tribal people, deeply connected to nature, hold invaluable lessons for the rest of the world in sustainable living.

What makes Prof. Sagar’s story even more remarkable is his humility. For years, he kept his illustrious academic background a secret. He never spoke about his degrees, his teaching career at IIT, or his family’s prominence. His identity only came to light during district elections in Betul when local authorities questioned him and asked him to leave. To prove his identity, he reluctantly revealed his qualifications, leaving everyone astonished.

When asked about his choice to live this way, Prof. Sagar remarked, “In India, people face so many problems, but they spend their time proving their intelligence through their degrees instead of serving others.”

A Legacy of Purpose and Simplicity
Prof. Alok Sagar’s life is a shining example of what it means to live with purpose. In a world obsessed with material wealth and success, his decision to dedicate himself to grassroots service offers a powerful contrast.

Some might argue that a person of his caliber could have achieved greater things or created more impact using his education and resources. However, Prof. Sagar’s path shows that true satisfaction doesn’t come from the scale of our achievements but from the depth of our dedication and the honesty of our actions.

His story also makes us question our priorities. As we face environmental crises and societal stress caused by relentless ambition, perhaps it’s time to embrace the values Prof. Sagar lives by—simplicity, respect for nature, and a commitment to making the world a better place for future generations.
