Omkar Nath Sharma, lovingly known as "Medicine Baba," is a shining example of how one person can make a world of difference. At 77, this extraordinary man from Delhi has dedicated his golden years to collecting unused medicines and giving them to the poor. His story is not just inspiring it’s a reminder of the power of compassion, even in the face of life’s challenges.
Sharma’s journey began in 2008 after witnessing a tragedy that would change his life forever. In East Delhi, an under-construction metro bridge collapsed, killing two workers and leaving many injured. The local hospital could only offer basic first aid, and the injured returned home to suffer many losing their lives simply because they couldn’t afford medicine. This heartbreaking incident shook Sharma to his core, and he vowed to never let another life be lost to such helplessness.
Walking the Path of Kindness
Despite being crippled in a car accident at the age of 12, Sharma refuses to let his physical limitations hold him back. Every morning, he dons his signature red kurta with "Medicine Bank" and his mobile number boldly printed on it, and sets out on foot. Walking five to six kilometers daily, he knocks on doors, asking for unused medicines that might otherwise go to waste.
With every medicine he collects, Sharma carries the hope of someone in need. He meticulously organizes them logging their names, manufacturers, and expiry dates and donates them to hospitals and NGOs. For him, each tablet, each vial, is a chance to save a life.
“People throw away medicines when they’re no longer needed, but those medicines can mean the world to someone who’s suffering. I’m just doing what I can,” he says with humility.
A Life of Sacrifice and Love
Sharma’s life hasn’t been easy. He lives in modest circumstances with his wife and a 45-year-old son who is mentally challenged. Yet, his own struggles only fuel his determination to help others. His warmth and sincerity have touched countless lives. While some people refuse to help, many others welcome him with open hearts, offering tea, water, and words of encouragement.
“I’ve seen too many people in pain, too many lives cut short because there was no system to distribute unused medicines. I want to change that, no matter how small my contribution may seem,” he says.
A Legacy of Hope
Omkar Nath Sharma’s story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit. His kindness and selflessness remind us that even the smallest acts can create ripples of change. Health experts agree with his vision, emphasizing the need for medicine banks across the country to ensure that unused medicines reach those who need them most.
